NEW YORK (AP) - A spokesman at Seton Hall University says one of its basketball team’s senior guards was shot and wounded Christmas night during an apparent robbery attempt in New York City.

Athletics spokesman Matt Sweeney says Jeremy Hazell (HAY’-zuhl) was treated at a Manhattan hospital and was released Sunday.

The South Orange, N.J.-based university’s spokesman says Hazell was shot “under his right arm” in Harlem, where his family lives. He says the injury is not life-threatening.

Hazell was kept overnight at the hospital as a precaution. He has been away from the basketball court since undergoing wrist surgery Dec. 2 for an injury suffered last month.

New York police won’t provide additional details of the shooting.

Hazell was not at Seton Hall’s 69-61 loss to the University of Richmond on Sunday.

(This version CORRECTS shooting was Dec. 25, not Dec. 24.)
