WASHINGTON (AP) — Getting home from the holidays is going to be tricky in the Washington area, and no one’s making any promises for clear sailing for Monday’s back-to-work commute, either.
Road crews were out all night in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, pretreating highways to deal with Sunday’s snow. The Virginia Department of Transportation put liquid magnesium and salt on highways and salt brine on some other roads.
Even with the pretreatment, though, Gabe Klein of the D.C. Department of Transportation said it’s going to be slippery because pavement temperatures are extremely low.
Trucks were pre-positioned along roads in Northern Virginia to begin salting and plowing as soon as the snow hit.
But with holiday travelers taking to the roads, VDOT spokeswoman Joan Morris said, snow-clearing trucks “are going to be competing with traffic.”
She said that depending on how much snow the area gets, VDOT can’t promise it will have all roads cleared by Monday morning’s rush hour.
