DETROIT (AP) - Mike Modano helped Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch’s Little Caesars organization win its first national youth hockey championship in 1985 as a young player.
Now Modano will try to help Ilitch win another Stanley Cup. The 40-year-old center took part Friday in a news conference at Joe Louis Arena after signing with the Wings.
Modano inked a one-year deal worth $1.25 million and the possibility of $500,000 more through performance-based bonuses.
He has 1,359 career points, the most by an NHL player born in the United States.
Modano is from nearby Livonia, is an eight-time All-Star and led the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup title in 1999.
