How can one explain South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham? We cheered him on when he stood on the floor of the House to argue why President Clinton should be impeached. We have applauded his efforts in the Senate to control illegal immigration; we considered him to be one of us. But then something happened.

Enter the Mr. Hyde version of Mr. Graham: He voiced his support for tax evader Timothy F. Geithner for secretary of the Treasury. Then followed one inconceivable vote after another. Mr. Graham voted to confirm liberal Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court and added to that by voting to confirm an even more liberal nominee, Solicitor General Elena Kagan (“Senate confirms Kagan to Supreme Court,” Web, News, Thursday).

Why would any Republican vote for someone who supports partial-birth abortion, undoubtedly the cruelest method of destroying the life of a viable human being? Let us not forget Ms. Kagan’s radical anti-gun advocacy and, as dean of Harvard Law School, her relegation of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) to the back of the bus.

Though we may applaud Mr. Graham for his Dr. Jekyll moments of sanity, the senator’s Mr. Hyde-like betrayal of conservative principles has made him a liability we can’t afford. Lindsey Graham has got to go.
