CLEVELAND (AP) - Indians catcher Carlos Santana was put on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, a day after he was carried from the field on a stretcher following a collision at home plate.
Santana has a sprained left knee, tests showed. The rookie left Monday night’s game in Boston with his left leg in an air cast.
“Big relief,” Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. “I think best scenario you wanted the kid back in three days, but the way he looked and probably what most of us were thinking, that it was going to be much worse than what we just heard from the doctor, so kind of a relief because it could have been worse.”
Santana was hurt after blocking home for an out in the seventh inning.
“Surgery remains an option, but I think we’ll have a better idea on the best way to treat his injury after we confer with some knee specialists,” head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff said on a conference call in Acta’s office before Tuesday’s game against the Red Sox. “All of us feared the worst just watching it, either in real time or on replay, and you never know what to expect. You fear for potential fractures, for ligament injuries inside the knee joint, cartilage issues, things that would really, really scare you and at this point with the examination we’ve undergone, we’ve not unearthed any of that so we do feel fortunate.”
Cleveland also put designated hitter Travis Hafner on the DL on Tuesday with right shoulder inflammation. He hasn’t played since July 28 because of fatigue in the surgically repaired shoulder. His move was retroactive to July 29.
“He was still feeling some soreness and if he was going to stay here it wasn’t going to be the most comfortable thing for him and for our ballclub, playing every other day, every third day, just to give him a blow,” Acta said.
The Indians have has recalled catcher Lou Marson and left-handed pitcher David Huff from Triple-A Columbus. Huff was to start in Boston on Tuesday night. Marson started at catcher.
