CAN WE GET SOME COMPANY?: Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry, told the Indian government Thursday that it wants to lead an “industry forum” for comprehensive talks on how government eavesdropping requirements and encrypted communications can co-exist.

THE BACKGROUND: India is threatening to shut down BlackBerry’s corporate e-mail service unless they get access to the text of the e-mails. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have similar concerns.

THE DEADLINE: As of earlier Thursday, the Indian government’s order to phone companies to shut down BlackBerry services on Tuesday was still in effect. It applies not just to the 1 million domestic BlackBerry users, but to visitors as well.
