OPINION:
A recent letter to the editor inaccurately claimed that thousands of birds would be killed annually as a result of the proposed Cape Wind renewable-energy project in Nantucket Sound (“Group’s environmental wind change,” Tuesday). This assertion has no merit or basis in fact.
Since 2002, Massachusetts Audubon Society scientists have conducted extensive avian research on the location of the project by air, land and water, using some of the most sophisticated technologies available. Our data show Cape Wind will not pose a significant ecological threat to Nantucket Sound or to its associated marine environment. This information is available publicly on our website.
As the oldest and largest nonprofit private conservation organization in the Northeast, we at Mass Audubon independently raised research funds and conducted multiple years of avian studies on our own. We have no formal or contractual relationship with Cape Wind and never have. We have not taken any money from Cape Wind, nor have we taken money from the project’s opponents.
As part of the permit and licensing process for Cape Wind, Mass Audubon will continue to analyze the project and make recommendations to federal agencies along with the rest of the public, as the project continues to seek final approval.
