WASHINGTON (AP) — Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James T. Conway said Tuesday it probably will be a “few years” before Afghanistan will be secure enough for the Marines to leave.
The Marines have been at the forefront of America’s toughest fights in the Taliban strongholds of Marjah and Kandahar.
Gen. Conway told reporters that while “some American unit somewhere in Afghanistan” will likely turn over combat duties to Afghan forces in 2011, it probably won’t be the Marines.
President Obama has said that troops will start pulling out in July 2011, although conditions on the ground will determine how many forces can leave and how fast.
