LUBBOCK, TEXAS (AP) - Texas Tech senior Taylor Potts will start the season at quarterback.
Potts will lead new coach Tommy Tuberville and the Red Raiders when they begin the season in two weeks against SMU. The senior from Abilene started 10 games last season, throwing for 3,440 yards and 22 touchdowns. His last start was a 29-of-43 performance for 372 yards and two scores in a 41-31 win over Michigan State in last year’s Alamo Bowl.
Tuberville announced his choice in a statement released Sunday. Potts had been competing with fellow senior Steven Sheffield for Texas Tech’s No. 1 job.
Potts has already earned his degree in exercise and sports science. This season will be his fifth with the Red Raiders, including a 2006 red-shirt season.
