The intent of Arizona’s immigration law has been muddied by the self-serving tantrums of Mexican-Americans who demand that their extended families in Mexico be permitted to continue visiting and living with them illegally and free from scrutiny (” ’Tea party’ backs immigration law,” Nation, Monday).

Our federal government is proposing a division of criminals into protected classes and non-protected classes based on race and ethnicity. To spare U.S. citizens of Mexican ancestry potential racial profiling, our government wants to unlawfully shield many thousands of illegal Mexican immigrants from customary law enforcement while offering no other group the same protection. Illegal immigrants from countries other than Mexico are apprehended, prosecuted and tossed out of the United States in half a heartbeat.

Whitewashing our severe illegal Mexican immigration problem has created a national security risk. To pretend it has not tells the world we Americans are getting dumber by the day. Arizona’s entire immigration law should go into effect immediately. Our country needs a federal law like Arizona’s state law.
