A recent Washington Times article states that New York Democratic Sen. Charles E. Schumer “and his allies want a bill that would grant a multistep path to citizenship to most illegal immigrants and that also would rewrite the rules on legal immigration” (“Senate hustles through $600M border bill,” Web, News, Thursday).

According to a report from the Center for Immigration Studies, 75 percent of all illegal aliens in the United States are Mexican citizens. The majority of these illegal aliens come here to attain the American dream and take it back to their native country. These scofflaws don’t come here because of idealism, but for the wealth they can acquire and one day take back to their native country.

I know that because I am of Hispanic heritage. I came to the United States as a legal immigrant, I am a naturalized U.S. citizen, and I often speak to illegal aliens about U.S. citizenship. Anybody who believes the myth that there will be a stampede to the naturalization offices after amnesty, please contact me. I have a bridge for sale.

As for rewriting the rules on legal immigration, I know firsthand that we have excellent immigration laws designed to protect the American people from crime, disease and poverty being brought into their country. It will be a freezing day in hell before the American people allow comprehensive immigration reform. Forget it, Mr. Schumer.

We don’t need immigration reform - we need immigration law enforcement.
