OPINION:
That Western democracies and even many Arab states apparently are waiting for an Israeli military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities is a measure of just how myopic and weak President Obama’s Iran policy has been (“Israel versus Iran,” Commentary, Monday).
But it is not just Mr. Obama who has miscalculated the persuasive properties of megawatt smiles and proffered glad-hands. The entire civilized world has assumed a craven posture before the uranium-enriching centrifuges whirring away at known and unknown installations in Iran.
We should all view with great dismay the idea that Israeli military action against Iran’s nuclear installations has become the West’s default policy. That Israel and Jews across the globe should have to confront this existential threat almost alone is nothing less than a measure of Western moral iniquity.
An Israel-goes-it-alone military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities will lead to certain global condemnation, a not-insignificant consideration for a tiny, isolated state dependent on international commerce and American goodwill, and equally certain terror attacks against Israel and Jews everywhere in the world. An Israeli strike will do more than this, however; it also will mark the failure of Western will.
