The nation’s highest-ranking military officer says the United States has a plan ready to attack Iran, although he added he is hopeful it won’t be needed.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the United States is prepared to use force to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

“Military options have been on the table and remain on the table,” Adm. Mullen said. “It’s one of the options that the president has.

“I hope we don’t get to that, but it’s an important option, and it’s one that’s well understood.”

Adm. Mullen didn’t give details as to what the plan entails.

But the chairman said that attacking Iran isn’t an option the United States seeks, “not just for the consequences of the action itself, but the things that could result after the fact.”
