Campbell to quarterback Eagles game

The Washington Redskins will have a new play caller Monday night against Philadelphia, but they will not have a new starting quarterback.

Coach Jim Zorn said today on his weekly radio show that Jason Campbell, benched at halftime of Sunday’s loss to Kansas City, will remain the starter ahead of Todd Collins.

“I’m going to go right back to Jason,” Zorn said on ESPN 980. “I didn’t give up on the young man; I didn’t give up on the QB. After all is said and done, [Campbell] is where I’m going to head.”

A team source said Monday night the choice would be Campbell because of the mobility that likely will be needed against Philadelphia’s attacking defense.

Campbell has a career 3-2 record against the Eagles and this year has six touchdowns and interceptions apiece and an 84.3 passer rating.

Campbell was removed from the game Sunday after going 6-of-19 for 89 yards and an interception. Zorn pointed to several missed throws and reads as the reason for the benching. It was the first time Campbell left a game because of performance in his 42-starter career.

With Campbell under center, the Redskins will debut play caller Sherm Lewis, who will be in the coach’s box. Zorn will remain the radio communicator with Campbell.

Zorn reiterated on the radio show he’s not thrilled with management’s decision to strip him of the play calling.

“I did not pick that,” he said. “I think it’s going to be very difficult. We’re all going to have this challenge before us. We’re going to make the best of it. We’re not out of the game planning — it’s not, ’See you Monday night and tell us what to do.’ We’ll game play in similar fashion.”
