More than 20 Potomac Job Corps students attended the annual Salute to Vets hosted by the Labor Department’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service. The Nov. 5 event featured a panel discussion with Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis; Iraq war veteran and businesswoman Dawn Halfaker, who lost her right arm in a rocket-propelled grenade attack; and retired Command Sgt. Maj. Michele S. Jones of the Army Reserve.

“I’ve seen many nations,” Sgt. Maj. Jones told students. “We live in a great country where people have all the rights and opportunities to become the most successful member of our society.”

The students said they appreciated hearing panelists discuss the importance of setting and reaching goals and assisting veterans in every aspect of their lives.

“This was a life-changing experience for me,” said Portia Brooks, security student of Potomac Job Corps Center. “To hear such powerful women to relate their experience as veterans and tremendous leaders was very inspirational.”
