The District is struggling with a 10.7 percent unemployment rate, something Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton is trying to lower.
Mrs. Norton, chairman of the subcommittee that oversees the General Services Administration, is hosting her annual job fair Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Ave. NW, Hall C.
The annual job fair is exclusively for D.C. residents from all job and professional backgrounds. Last year, more than 4,000 people attended the event.
“This deep recession does not mean that there are no jobs, particularly in this region, which is doing better than most,” said Mrs. Norton, the District’s nonvoting House member.
Private companies, federal and local agencies and nonprofit and training organizations with jobs currently available will attend the event. Companies available include Aflac, American University, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, First Choice Staffing, H&R Block, National Public Radio, RCN, the Washington Convention Center, Washington Gas and government agencies, including Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, FBI, Office of Personnel Management and the Peace Corps. A complete list of participating agencies and businesses with job openings will be available at the event.
Participants must bring proof of D.C. residency (driver’s license, non-driver photo ID, a utility bill, etc.), as well as resume copies, and are asked to wear professional attire.
Although the job fair begins at 11 a.m., a jobs workshop that includes tips for job hunting in a struggling economy, information on apprenticeship training and stimulus jobs, as well as a “Dress for Success” fashion show, will begin at 9:30 a.m.
