’Mandela Day’ a hoped-for tradition
A weeklong celebration of “Mandela Day” in New York City will end with a three-hour concert at Radio City Music Hall on Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday, July 18.
Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Josh Groban, Alicia Keys, Will.i.am, Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, Dave Steward, Lil’ Kim, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Jesse McCartney, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Gaynor and Zucchero are expected to perform, and actors Whoopi Goldberg, Forest Whitaker, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon and Susan Sarandon also are scheduled to appear. The concert begins at 8 p.m.
Celebrating Mr. Mandela’s life is meant to remind people of their individual power and ability to change the world for the better, organizers said. Mr. Mandela’s global HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention campaign, named 46664, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are sponsoring the event, hoping to create an official Mandela Day to be recognized annually on July 18.
Concert tickets are priced from $95 to $250 and are on sale at www.ticketmaster.com, www.livenation.com, www.thegarden.com or by phone at 800/745-3000.
