ST. PAUL, Minn. — Republican vice presidential pick and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Monday said her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

“Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents,” Mrs. Palin said in a statement.

“As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support,” said Mrs. Palin, adding that her daughter will be getting married to the father.

Rumors of Miss Palin’s pregnancy had arisen in the days since Mr. McCain announced her mother as his running mate on Friday.

Mrs. Palin made a brief stop for breakfast with some delegates to the Republican National Convention Monday morning, and the campaign said she was spending the rest of the day writing her convention speech, to be delivered Wednesday.
