American voters Tuesday elected Sen. Barack Obama the nation’s first black president.

With wins in formerly Republican states of Ohio, Florida, Virginia, New Mexico and Idaho, Mr. Obama was projected to have the the 270 electoral votes needed to secure the presidency at 11 p.m.
