WEEKEND REWIND - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Indianapolis 500: The race had an anticlimactic final few laps after Danica Patrick collided with Ryan Briscoe and couldn’t finish. Crashes bring some viewers to car racing, but the last thing IndyCar wanted was its biggest casual fan attraction idling on pit row as announcers tried to explain how the race was effectively over for all but the most fervent fans. It was part of a banner day for Patrick, who complained about her car’s speed during the race and then stormed toward Briscoe’s pit area after the collision before being stopped by track personnel. Oh, and Scott Dixon won his first Indy 500.

Red Wings stomp Penguins: Mikael Samuelsson’s two goals and Chris Osgood’s 19 saves led to an Octopus-flying affair in Detroit on Saturday night as the Red Wings opened the Stanley Cup Finals with a 4-0 win. One of Detroit’s less-heralded Swedes, Samuelsson was a dominant player against Pittsburgh’s inexperienced defense and young goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury. Game 2 is tonight back at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

TWT FIVE - FORMER CAPS IN STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS

1. Sergei Gonchar: Gonchar has 11 points in 15 games for the Penguins, anchoring the defense along with Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang.

2. Jaromir Jagr: After being lambasted for an inconsistent regular season, Jagr led the Rangers with 15 points in the playoffs.

3. Ron Wilson: Not a player, but the former Caps coach led the Sharks to the second round. Since he didn’t take San Jose as far as the he did Washington, he was fired because that worked out so well for the Caps, too.

4. Andrew Brunette: The top goal-scorer for the Avalanche, but the combination of Brunette and Joe Sakic wasn’t enough to get past the Red Wings.

5. Dainius Zubrus: The least productive former Caps player in this year’s playoffs, Zubrus managed only one assist and earned a minus-3 rating in five games.
