The light at the end of the tunnel is now within reach. Downtown is becoming more crowded, there are fewer press conferences to attend and it’s taking longer to get an elevator at the hotel. All of this means it’s almost time for the Super Bowl.

Friday is reserved for the two coaches and the commissioner to conduct briefings at the Media Center. Sir Scribble attended none of the events. I ignored Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick (what new can be said?) and watched Roger Goodell on television.

A main topic for Goodell was SpyGate, which resurfaced yesterday when Sen. Arlen Specter obviously had nothing else to do.

Specter wants The Commish to explain his decision to destroy the tapes confiscated from the Patriots. Goodell said he ordered the destruction because footage was leaked to Fox days after the affair began.

This is a story about nothing. The Patriots cheated. They got caught and were penalized. The league found no evidence it happened in their Super Bowl seasons (2001, 2003, 2004). Story over. Not quite.

Specter is from Pennsylvania — the Eagles lost to New England in the Super Bowl XXXIX. He’s showing his peeps he’s fighting for the home-state football team.
