NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A piano played and signed by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Fats Domino is up for bid in an online auction to support environmentally friendly rebuilding efforts in hurricane-devastated New Orleans.
The piano, made from wood harvested in areas that are not environmentally threatened, is among about two dozen autographed instruments at auction for the New Orleans arm of the environmental group Global Green USA.
Global Green has been working with area residents, schools and businesses to renovate or rebuild Katrina-damaged structures using energy-saving materials such as metal roofing and recycled textiles.
Mr. Domino, 79, wasn’t available for comment, but his longtime friend Haydee Ellis said, “Fats is interested in anything that helps rebuild New Orleans.”
Mr. Ellis was among the intimate crowd gathered at a downtown hotel on May 24, when Mr. Domino performed “Ain’t That a Shame” on the Baldwin baby grand.
The piano will be on display in the hotel’s lobby during the auction, which ends Wednesday.
