SEEN AND HEARD AT ROGERS CENTRE IN TORONTO

When the Nationals’ 2007 schedule was unveiled, Shawn Hill immediately took notice of this weekend’s series and looked forward to pitching in his hometown. The Mississauga, Ontario, native pitched here last summer but experienced elbow pain afterward and was shut down for the rest of the season. Now, he’s back on the DL with injuries to both his right elbow and his left shoulder. So it’ll be a bittersweet few days in Toronto for the 26-year-old.

“Oh, yeah,” he said. “It’s nice to be here, but at the same time, I still feel like a bump on a log. I’m not doing anything productive.”

The good news? Hill played catch yesterday and said he felt good. There’s still no timetable for his return, though.

OVERHEARD

“He looks right now like he can step up there and hit, the way he’s taking batting practice and all that. But we all know that’s not his problem, and that we play in the National League.”

Manny Acta, on injured first baseman Nick Johnson, who still can’t maneuver well enough in the field to play.
