Washington Wizards assistant coach Tom Young, who coached Eddie Jordan when the Wizards coach was in college at Rutgers, announced yesterday he is retiring.
Young, 74, also was a coach at Catholic, American and Old Dominion and an assistant at Maryland. He spent the last four years as a member of Jordan’s staff.
“I really enjoyed my coaching career, especially the last four seasons with the Washington Wizards,” Young said. “I want to thank the Wizards for this tremendous opportunity. It was great that I had the chance to be reunited with Eddie. I am proud of what we accomplished and that we advanced to the playoffs for the past three seasons.”
Jordan played point guard for the Rutgers team that reached the Final Four in 1976.
“I learned a great deal about the game of basketball from Tom,” Jordan said. “I enjoyed playing under Tom and then having the opportunity to work with him later in my coaching career. Tom was a great resource and a valuable contributor to our coaching staff in Washington. I would like to thank Tom and his wife, Nancy, for their special friendship and support. I wish them both the very best and will miss them.”
In other Wizards news, the team will resume predraft workouts at Verizon Center in preparation for the June 28 draft.
Today’s workout will include Eric Dawson (Midwestern State), Aaron Gray (Pittsburgh), Darryl Watkins (Syracuse) and Major Wingate (Tennessee).
The Wizards have the 16th and 47th picks.
