It was a picture of brevity.

Nationals manager Manny Acta arrived promptly at 4 p.m. for his daily pre-game press conference and was on his way back to the locker room moments later. The manager answered a total of eight questions and didn’t expand on any of his answers, in favor of one or two quick sentences.

Acta looked and sounded like a manager of a team in a tailspin. Washington has lost nine of 11 games and scored more than three runs just once in that span.

Acta was asked if he anticipated using his bullpen as much as he has.

The usually jovial manager was expressionless with his succinct answer: “Yes.”

Reporters realized it was futile to continue, and the uneasy session was over.
