SEEN AND HEARD AT RFK STADIUM

What a great scene at the ballpark yesterday.

A hazy but not terribly humid day produced a huge crowd of 39,207 that included 6,680 walk-up sales.

The Nationals have a chance to establish a real nice traction on Independence Day. The 12:05 p.m. start was a nice touch because it allowed fans to come to the park and still have the whole afternoon/evening to barbecue at home or catch the fireworks on the Mall.

Look for this to become an annual event, one that should grow in stature once the club moves into its new ballpark next year.

BY THE NUMBERS

5 Grand slams hit by the Nationals this season, tied with Houston for second most in the majors. (Milwaukee has six.)

TONIGHT’S GAME

Cubs LHP Sean Marshall (4-3, 3.50) vs. Nationals RHP Jason Bergmann (1-5, 3.47), 7:05 p.m., MASN, AM-1500, FM-107.7.
