After a snoozefest NBA Finals, David Stern was looking for ways to keep his league in the news during the offseason. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell likely would’ve welcolmed any news that didn’t involve guns or Tank Johnson.
This summer, though, surely isn’t what either had in mind.
Two major scandals — one which threatens to ruin the career of a football superstar, the other rocking the NBA to its core — thrust two of the major sports into the spotlight today for all the wrong reasons.
Stern held a press conference in New York to address reports that a former referee bet on games he officiated during the last two seasons, a situation Stern called the worst he had experienced during his tenure as NBA commissioner.
Goodell has his own storm to weather. Yesterday he barred Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick from the Falcons’ training camp until the league reviews the dogfighting charges against him.
