CHICAGO CUBS AT WASHINGTON NATIONALS

Where: RFK Stadium

Today: 7:05 p.m., LHP Ted Lilly (6-4, 4.03) vs. RHP Jason Simontacchi (5-5, 5.81).

Tomorrow: 7:05 p.m., RHP Carlos Zambrano (9-6, 4.20) vs. LHP Micah Bowie (4-3, 4.39).

Wednesday: 12:05 p.m., LHP Rich Hill (5-5, 3.49) vs. LHP Matt Chico (3-5, 4.74).

Thursday: 7:05 p.m., LHP Sean Marshall (4-3, 3.50) vs. RHP Jason Bergmann (1-5, 3.47).

Series breakdown: It wasn’t long ago that the Cubs were on the verge of overheating, with manager Lou Piniella’s veins bursting and Michael Barrett looking to fight with any teammate in sight. But Chicago has turned things around, is back within striking distance of Milwaukee in the National League Central and has shipped Barrett off to San Diego. The key player who has spurred this club? Old friend Alfonso Soriano, who led baseball with 11 homers in June and should receive a warm ovation at RFK tonight.
