TAKE YOUR PICK “SHOULD PLAYERS HAVE SKIPPED LAST NIGHT’S HOME RUN DERBY?
1. The case for skipping: Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr., David Ortiz and Barry Bonds decided not to participate because of concerns that their hitting mechanics might suffer. Advocates for skipping may cite recent examples of second-half slumps like Bobby Abreu’s after his appearance in 2005. After belting 41 homers in that Derby, Abreu has hit only 20 in the two years since.
2. The case for swinging: Ryan Howard won last year’s derby and actually increased his home run production afterward. He also competed last night.
Our Take: Swing it. There is no empirical evidence that supports either claim. But players like Rodriguez, Griffey, Ortiz (who actually improved his numbers in the second half of the 2005 season) and Bonds should have competed because the fans voted for them.
