It was close to 100 degrees when the Nationals hit the field for batting practice at RFK Stadium late yesterday afternoon, but the message posted on the grease board outside the clubhouse might have helped cool them off a bit.

In preparation for their rendezvous with Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants starting tomorrow, the board read:

 Pack Warm For S.F.

 High Temp — Upper 50s

 Low Temp — Lower 50s

It brought to mind a famous quote attributed to Mark Twain (who apparently didn’t really say it): “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

BY THE NUMBERS

8 Position in the batting order by Cardinals starting pitcher Joel Pineiro. Second baseman Adam Kennedy batted ninth (and homered in his first at-bat).

TODAY’S GAME

Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright (10-8, 4.38) vs. Nationals LHP Matt Chico (5-6, 4.73), 1:35 p.m., MASN, AM-1500, FM-107.7.
