SEEN AND HEARD

There’s always one assistant coach with offbeat drills. For a while, it was Norv Turner’s special teams coach, Pete Rodriguez. Later, it was tight ends coach Mike Pope. These days, that man is defensive line coach Greg Blache. Yesterday’s wackiness had Blache’s charges smacking the padded goal post and then putting a spin move on it as if it were a blocker. Not surprisingly, the D-linemen won every time.

LARON LANDRY (HOT)

The sixth pick in the draft didn’t look like a rookie after missing the previous six practices during a holdout.

STEPHON HEYER (HOT)

The rookie free agent from Maryland is getting a serious shot at winning a backup job while four-time Pro Bowl offensive left tackle Chris Samuels is sidelined with a sprained knee.

CLINTON PORTIS (COLD)

The No. 1 running back’s return to health lasted all of six practices before he needed to sit out with tendinitis in his knee.

Leigh Torrence

Age: 25

Position: CB

Ht/Wt: 5-11, 179

College: Stanford

Torrence, signed by Green Bay as a free agent in 2004, caught on with Atlanta for 10 games, playing mostly on special teams. Torrence was cut by the Falcons last September. He signed with the Redskins the final week of the season but didn’t play. Torrence is a fine athlete (a sprinter at Stanford) and smart enough (Academic All-Pac 10), but it’s an uphill struggle to displace any of the five veteran corners ahead of him.
