The kicker carousel will keep spinning for the Washington Commanders. The franchise released kicker Cade York on Monday, less than 24 hours after his shaky debut during the season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
York missed 56-yard and 47-yard field goal attempts, though he converted a pair of extra points. The former Cleveland Brown also sent a kickoff out of bounds, allowing the Buccaneers to start a drive from their own 40-yard line.
“Missing those chances, that hurt,” Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Sunday. He noted that the front office, led by general manager Adam Peters, would look at bringing in another kicker this week.
The Commanders reportedly was expected to sign kicker Austin Seibert on Monday to replace York. Seibert was drafted in the fifth round by the Browns in 2019. Seibert, 27, is 45-of-56 on field goals and 56-of-62 on extra points in his career. In addition to the Browns, Seibert has also played for the Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and most recently, the New York Jets.
The Commanders sent a conditional seventh-round draft pick to the Browns for York in August. However, since York only played one game, Washington will keep the draft selection.
The Commanders have cycled through a bevy of kickers throughout the offseason.
Peters signed veteran specialist Brandon McManus during free agency, but the team released him after two women accused him of sexual misconduct on a flight to London when he was a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Ramiz Ahmed was the next to join the squad, but he lost the job after underwhelming during training camp. Riley Patterson was brought in to compete with Ahmed, but he struggled as well.
The Commanders, and Seibert, will take the field at Northwest Stadium on Sunday for a home opener against the New York Giants.
