As one series with Virginia ends, another begins for Maryland.
The Terrapins and Cavaliers have announced a renewal of their men’s basketball rivalry with a series to begin next year. The four-game, home-and-home series starts in Charlottesville for the 2025-26 season before coming to College Park the following season and continuing through 2028-29.
“Maryland and Virginia have a long basketball history and we’re excited to bring this series back to life,” Terrapins coach Kevin Willard said in a statement. “Looking ahead, I think it means a lot to our fanbase to have our historic rivalries rekindled between Georgetown and now Virginia.”
The two state schools on opposite sides of the Potomac River have met 184 times, most recently in 2018 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Dating to 1913, Maryland leads the all-time series 108-76.
“I greatly respect coach Willard and what he’s doing there,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said in a statement. “We’ve played some exciting games against Maryland in the past, and we’re looking forward to a highly competitive series.”
Like in football, Virginia is Maryland’s most-played rival, though this Saturday’s game in Charlottesville is the last of a two-game football series, with no future dates currently scheduled.
Willard has made it a priority to get regional rivalries back on Maryland’s schedule since taking over the program two seasons ago. Maryland will also begin a four-game series with Georgetown starting next season.
