PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Someone shot and killed a 42-year-old man Monday afternoon near a park in North Portland in the 15th fatal shooting in the city this year, police said.

Multiple calls came in at about 2:25 p.m. Monday about a shooting in the Eliot neighborhood, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Arriving officers found a person lying on the sidewalk near Dawson Park. Police say the victim appeared to have been shot, and did not survive.

The circumstances of the shooting weren’t immediately known, but a woman who lives in the area said she heard four gunshots, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported. An investigation is underway. Mayor Ted Wheeler, addressing reporters at the scene, said Portland’s run of recent shootings “is our top public safety concern.”

The cause and manner of death will be officially determined by the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s office.

Portland Police Homicide detectives are investigating. Police ask anyone who has information about the hooting to contact detectives, who think there may have been several people in the park who left before police arrived.
