The NFL combined country singer Eric Church and R&B star Jazmine Sullivan to perform the national anthem ahead of Super Bowl LV, and the duet received rave reviews.
The challenge ahead of Church and Sullivan related to the precedent before them. Thirty years ago, Whitney Houston performed what’s considered the best national anthem rendition at the 1991 Super Bowl in Tampa Bay. Sullivan honored Houston during Sullivan’s rehearsal, wearing a jumpsuit similar to Houston’s.
While Church and Sullivan might not have surpassed Houston’s example, the pairing appeared to be a success.
Here are some of the reactions to the Church and Sullivan medley:
Best anthem I’ve heard in a long time. @ericchurch and @jsullivanmusic absolutely brilliance. #SuperBowl

The internet had positive things to write about Warren Snipe, too, who performed the sign language versions of “America the Beautiful” and the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
