PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Three people died in a vehicle crash Wednesday northwest of Portland, Oregon, according to police.
Oregon State Police said troopers and emergency personnel responded to a crash involving two vehicles just after 10 a.m. on U.S. Highway 26 in Clatsop County.
Walter Smith, 21, of Pendleton, Oregon was driving a Mercedes station wagon west when he lost control, slid sideways into the eastbound lanes and collided with a Toyota Tacoma, police said.
Smith and his passengers, 20-year-old Erick Fadness of Decorah, Iowa and a 16-year-old Portland girl, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead, according to state police.
The driver of the Toyota, Natalie Swauger, 30, of Seaside, Oregon, was flown to a Portland hospital.
Speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash, police said.
