LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas on Friday reported 724 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus and seven more deaths from the illness it causes.

The Department of Health reported the number of confirmed cases in the state since the pandemic began in March now totals 72,338. The department said 146 of the cases reported Friday were in correctional facilities.

The actual number of cases in Arkansas is likely higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

The total number of Arkansas deaths from COVID-19, the illness the coronavirus causes, now totals 1,173. The number of people hospitalized dropped by eight to 381.

The department said 2,201 antigen tests were conducted 411 people tested positive through them.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and a cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
