MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Cheldon Williams has been named director of West Virginia University’s marching band.

Williams will take over on Aug. 1, WVU said in a news release. He replaces Stephen Lytle, who resigned on May 1.

Williams most recently was a graduate teaching assistant with the marching band at the University of Texas, where he graduated this year with a doctor of musical arts degree in wind conducting.

Williams has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Florida State University. He also served in band directing positions at two high schools and at New Mexico State University.

In addition to directing the Pride of West Virginia, Williams will conduct WVU’s Symphonic Band and other athletic pep bands as well as teach music classes. He will also assist Director of Bands Scott Tobias in administering the WVU Bands program.

“I intend for the West Virginia University Marching Band to serve as ambassadors for the heart and spirit of the university,” Williams said.
