BANGOR, Maine (AP) - Maine’s two U.S. senators said a state apprenticeship program has received nearly a half million dollars in federal funding to expand.

The Maine Department of Labor’s Registered Apprenticeship Program received $450,000 from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.

Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, and Sen. Angus King, an independent, said in a statement the federal government awarded the money to grow the apprenticeship program “by broadening registered apprenticeships to include health care, mental health care, addiction treatment and alternative pain management occupations.”

The senators said the expansion of the apprenticeship program will help more Maine residents build important skills that lead to higher paying jobs.
