FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky reported nearly 800 new coronavirus cases and eight more virus-related deaths Friday.

With 792 additional cases, the total number of cases surpassed 46,750 since the pandemic began, Gov. Andy Beshear said. The latest cases included 114 youngsters ages 18 and under, he said.

The eight latest deaths raised the state’s virus-related death count to 918, the governor said.

“Again, it’s been a hard month. It’s going to probably be an even harder September,” Beshear said.

Kentucky’s positivity rate - a rolling figure reflecting the average number of tests coming back positive for COVID-19 - stayed below 5% at 4.50%.

“The good news is our positivity rate continues to decline,” Beshear said. “If we keep wearing these masks and we keep doing the work, we can get this to a manageable level to get our kids back in school and get back to more of our old lives.”

The governor has recommended that schools wait until Sept. 28 to resume in-person classes, relying on virtual learning until then, to give more time to get a recent surge of virus cases under control.
