Music icon Cher has spent several days on social media this week, citing President Trump’s refusal to provide $25 billion in aid for the troubled U.S. Postal Service. On Wednesday, the pop star revealed on Twitter that she wanted to help out somehow. Cher tried to volunteer at her local post office in Malibu, California.

She was rejected. The hiring protocol of the post office apparently kicked in.

“OK, called 2 post offices In Malibu. They were polite. I Said ’Hi This Is Cher, and I Would like to know If you ever take Volunteers Lady Said She Didn’t Know & Gave Me # Of Supervisor. I Called and Said Hi This is Cher Do U Accept volunteers. NO, Need Fingerprints & Background Check.’” Cher tweeted, in typical Twitter shortspeak.

The idea of Cher working in a post office caught the public’s fancy. She immediately led the national trends on Twitter, drawing considerable media coverage.

“Many stunned fans have been replying to her with other suggestions, from donating mail sorters to registering as a poll worker to even designing a stamp collection,” reported Billboard.

“Sorry, Cher. The USPS doesn’t allow volunteers — but they are hiring,” advised CNN.

“Let Cher volunteer at the post office, dammit,” declared Vulture, an online culture news organization.
