BOSTON (AP) - Boston’s mayor has released a new plan to deal with the city’s notorious “Methadone Mile” drug haven.
Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh’s plan for the Boston Medical Center-area calls for a stepped up police presence, more outreach workers to encourage those dealing with addiction to seek treatment and more city workers to collect discarded needles and other trash.
Walsh says the plan released Friday will help those with addiction as well those living in impacted neighborhoods.
The area has long been a haven for illegal drug use because it’s home to numerous methadone clinics, sober homes and other treatment services, but the city has struggled to address it as it’s worsened during the national opioid crisis.
Walsh’s administration was criticized for a harsh crackdown this summer after a corrections officer was attacked.
