ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A new monument has been unveiled along Albany’s Hudson River waterfront to commemorate a major military feat pulled off by Continental soldiers during the American Revolution.
The Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area has placed the monument and posted information at Jennings Landing on the river’s west bank. Mayor Kathy Sheehan and other elected officials unveiled the monument Thursday.
The monument commemorates the Henry Knox Cannon Trail, named for the Continental Army officer who led the transport of dozens of cannons from Crown Point and Fort Ticonderoga in northern New York to Gen. George Washington’s army as it besieged the British in Boston in the winter of 1775-1776.
The delivery of 59 cannons forced the redcoats to evacuate Boston in March 1776.
In 1927, 56 monuments were placed at key points along Knox’s route, including Albany’s riverfront.
