PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The war of words to sway public opinion over a proposed hospital systems merger in Rhode Island is heating up.
Care New England and Brigham Health - a division of Boston-based Partners HealthCare - on Tuesday launched a website to tout the benefits of a merger, saying it will improve affordable health care for all Rhode Islanders.
The site also counters some of the claims made by Lifespan, which last week warned of “devastating consequences” for Rhode Island should state regulators approve Partners’ acquisition of Care New England. Lifespan also set up an online petition .
Lifespan operates Rhode Island, Miriam, Hasbro Children’s, Newport and Bradley hospitals. Care New England operates Kent, Butler and Women & Infants hospitals. Partners is anchored by Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General hospitals in Boston.
