MADISION, WIs. (AP) - Madison’s mayor wants to enhance security at the city’s downtown Independence Day celebration after a shooting in a crowd of people at the event left one person injured.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the shooting at Saturday night’s Festival Foods Shake the Lake fireworks display left attendees fleeing in terror.

A 20-year-old man who was shot suffered non-life threatening injuries and an officer injured his leg after falling from a concrete barrier in the aftermath of the shooting. Police believe the shooter knew the victim and it was not a random act.

Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said the shooting is “entirely unacceptable” and even though many security precautions were in place, she plans to work with police to improve safety.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval called the incident “an anomaly.”
