CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man caught trying to steal a newspaper from a home has been arrested and charged with a felony.
A news release from Charleston police says Sgt. Michael Niblock on Sunday staked out the location where a homeowner reported her copies of The Washington Post and The Post and Courier had been stolen.
Sgt. Niblock observed the man with a 5-foot (1.5 meter) pole trying to retrieve the paper through a metal gate. The action also was caught on surveillance video provided to The Post and Courier.
The officer arrested 61-year-old Robert Dwayne Sutton. Police say Sutton initially was charged with petit larceny but that was upgraded because of previous shoplifting convictions.
It’s unclear whether Sutton had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
