DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A man faces charges after police say he hijacked a Des Moines city bus and forced the driver to speed through red lights downtown before being arrested.

The Des Moines Register says the incident began late Monday when 25-year-old Abraham Ramirez, of Des Moines, boarded the bus as the lone passenger and ordered the driver to speed away or “I’ll bust your head wide open.” Police say he continued to threaten the driver until the bus stopped at a police station. Police say Ramirez then told the driver to honk the horn repeatedly and said he would kill the first officer to show up.

Police say the driver wasn’t injured, and Ramirez didn’t show a weapon before he was arrested.

Ramirez is being held at the Polk County Jail on charges of third-degree kidnapping, extortion, harassment and false imprisonment.
