TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has picked an aide to Sen. Cory Booker to be his next chief of staff.
The Democratic governor said in a statement Friday that George Helmy will succeed outgoing chief of staff Pete Cammarano. Helmy currently serves as the Democratic senator’s state director.
The governor’s chief of staff is responsible managing the governor’s office as well as the executive branch and Cabinet agencies.
Cammarano left the job recently after just a year.
Helmy has been Booker’s state director for three years and was deputy chief of staff in his state office for two years before that. Helmy will earn $175,000 a year in the new post.
Booker is weighing a run for president in 2020.
