CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The co-owner of a restaurant who was shot and killed while opening for business appears to have been targeted by two male suspects who police in North Carolina say wanted to rob him.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said at a news conference Wednesday that they hope the public can help lead investigators to whoever killed Scott Brooks, 61, news outlets reported.
Brooks was fatally shot Monday morning while opening Brooks Sandwich House for business, police said. He owned the restaurant with his twin brother, David. The shop has been open since 1973.
“They knew their neighbors and were there to help them,” Lt. Bryan Crum said. “Today, the Brooks family needs the community’s help.”
The restaurant may have been targeted because customers must pay in cash only, according to police. Crum says it’s unclear whether the suspects were able to take anything from the business.
Brooks’ death is the 104th homicide in Charlotte this year, police said.
A vigil was held Tuesday night in honor of Brooks. Funeral arrangements are scheduled for this weekend, news outlets reported.
