ST. GEORGE, S.C. (AP) - The former chief financial officer for the school district of Berkeley County, South Carolina, has been sentenced to 11 years in state prison for embezzling more than $1.2 million.

The Post and Courier reports Circuit Judge Deadra Jefferson handed down the sentence Friday to 62-year-old Brantley D. Thomas III. Thomas will serve the state sentence immediately after he finishes serving 63 months in federal prison. His combined sentences add up to 16¼ years behind bars - about the same amount of time during which he stole from the district.

Jefferson also ordered Thomas to pay nearly $1 million in restitution to the school district.

Thomas apologized during the hearing to his family, friends and school officials. Defense attorney Leon Stavrinakis says Thomas knows he caused a lot of hurt.
